Want To Become A Basketball Coach.

Q - Dear Annabelle,
I need help ! The last time I wrote to you you gave me the advice I needed to hear. This time we are touching on another subject.

I am a 25 year old athlete. I have been playing basketball all my life I know little of anything to perfection the way I know basketball. I want to become a basketball coach one day and give back some of the valuable lessons that were given to me. However, I want to study marketing too. I believe I have interest in that area, but I really don't have the patience to sit behind no desk. I am the type of individual who likes variety, challenge, change and versatility. I get bored doing common things and eventually lose interest. However, until I find a coaching job I need to occupy myself with something.

I've had desk jobs before and hated them. I had recreational jobs, but only find part time work in the fun fields. I wish I could take some kind of test to help me choose a field I would love, until I can get what I really want. Any suggestions?

I have another question. I am currently a professional athlete. I don't want to go into specifics, but the season is new and on the rise. I was grateful to get selected to join one of the teams this year and it was unfortunate I was unable to show how great a performer I am because of so many changes in the league, with coaches and players. I try to think positive and hope that next year will be different, but I am not guaranteed a spot next year because my contract ended this year and it has yet to be renewed. I want to enjoy my achievements, but it is hard for me because I don't know if I will have a fair chance to prove how good I really am next year.

I have a new agent I am working with and I am hoping he will make things possible for me. It worked so hard to build all that I did last year to get selected and I hate to start at the bottom again. I have tried some marketing tools and it was going great for a brief period. Now I am brainstorming on how I can make my name stick on these people's minds positively. Do you have any suggestions that can guide to the truths besides prayer, because I already express myself with that? This is something I have worked my entire life for and I want it more than anything in this world. Connections are the key and so are politics.

A - Dear M,

Probably the first thing you could consider is finding a good psychometrist, (thatās a person who administers psychological tests), and ask to be tested for occupational interests. There are several really good tests for interests and abilities and that would go long way toward finding your strengths. That you donāt like desk work is not unusual......back in the dim past when I was a teenager and tried a desk job --- once -- I learned that the world is divided into those who can work regular hours at a desk and those who are rather more of the free form type. This is a good thing to know about yourself...it saves everyone a lot of grief.

In life you generally get a shot at that for which you have a passion. Your turn will come all the sooner if you stay Īout thereā and keep exploring possibilities. Let everyone know what your goals are, always be cheerful and upbeat. Though the saying Ībloom where you are plantedā has a lot of merit, if you have found that youāre Īplantedā in an atmosphere not conducive to your particular growth needs, then you need to pull up roots, as it were, and find a more rewarding surrounding.

Thereās Īsomethingā that happens when you Īcreate a contextā. By that, I mean when you simply Īprogramā the universe toādeliverā that which you want. As in I Īexpect ____(this thing)____to happenā, for some mysterious, (and really wonderful), reason, what you so passionately require will come to you. There are two things required of you in return. A willingness to recognize when you HAVE what you say you want and a willingness to give up whatever is preventing you from having what you say you want.

Let me put it in an easy three part formulae:

1. What do you want?

2. How soon do you want it?

(ready?...here comes the biggie...)

3. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE UP to get it??)

Good luck to you on your adventure........it your want it itās there for you. (One last thought). When you Īgetā what you Īwantā it may not be exactly in the form that you had envisioned. The universe has an interesting way of delivering Īsomethingā and it is our job to Īseeā that what has been delivered to us is what it was we have been seeking. Mysterious, yes, but thatās part of the joy of being human.
