What Is Psychotherapy Exactly??

Q - Dear Annabelle,
Thank you so much for your reply to my email. I agree that I do need therapy but what is psychotherapy exactly?

A - Dear Vicki,

Psychotherapy is something like taking your car in for a Ītune upā, only, in this case, you take your belief system in for, sort of, the same thing. As we develop as humans, all along the way from early infancy, we make decisions about what we perceive is happening to us....and FEW of those decisions are accurate perceptions and interpretations. (MOST, in fact, are erroneous.) Then we spend our lives finding situations that FIT our erroneous beliefs. Now, just as you don't think about walking, talking, and breathing, neither does your mind question the Īfiltersā through which it sifts information. You made decisions as an infant that are completely erroneous, and yet your adult life is based on those very decisions.

A good psychotherapist will allow you to begin to question your underlying beliefs and you wil begin to move to a different kind of understanding. The process is sometimes called Ībecoming consciousā.

You have a good University there near you, they have a Department of Psychology. Give them a call and ask for a referral..it could be they even have a clinic for therapists-in-training, (interns). Good luck on your journey of self discovery!
