Q - Dear Annabelle,
Me and my girlfriend has been dating for about 3 and a half years now. In November of '97, I got into a real bad car accident and was in the hospital for about 3 months. Before my accident I rarely ever got into a fight with my girlfriend, now we get into fights almost every month or so. We use to see each other almost every other day before my accident, and now I see her once a week now. Sometimes I don't even see her at all. And she gets mad at me because sometimes I really don't know what to say. Any ideas on what to do will be greatly appreciated.
A - Dear Tom,
You didnāt say how old you are, (yes, thatās important), but you may be having a reaction to your accident....and youāve probably had time to give your life, and itās importance, some real thought. I donāt know where you are in life stages, (thatās what the age is for),........and your girlfriend sounds as if sheās, perhaps, immature and rather at sea about whatās going on in your life.
I really recommend that you go for professional help, one, for a good medical checkup vis a vis the possibility of needing anti-depressant medication, and, two, just for a normal checkup and reassurance that your behavior is not abnormal at this stage in your recovery. It could be that a good psychologist could help you explore other issues, this is something your doctor could help you decide........IF heās educated in that area.
Depressive reactions after serious accidents are not uncommon, and your girlfriend may, or may not, have a good understanding of what is going on in your life. If you do find a therapist, it could be that your girlfriend might accompany you on a session.
Good luck, Iām sure this is tough for you.
- Annabelle
